I am a Campaigner for constructive change.
The Easy Reading for Adults (ERA) Initiative which I led at Wits University in the 1990s saw the beginnings of my activism and advocacy for adult literacy and reading promotion.
To promote reading and writing amongst newly literate adults, I ran the BTA/Anglo Platinum short story competition from 1990 to 2008 which generated thousands of homegrown Southern African stories and several publications.
I lobbied the SA government to launch Masifunde Sonke in 2001 a 5-year national reading campaign which brought government, business and civil society together to rally around a single national imperative.
I launched the Men’s Writing Challenge of 2015 because I felt that if we heard from men around how they were feeling about women, we would get a better handle on building more peaceful relations between the genders.
I implemented the Humane League’s Cage-Free Campaign in South Africa in 2017 to push the corporate sector to support a cruelty-free cage-free egg supply; this work honed my tactical thinking further.
I’m an animal rights activist and have twice addressed protestors outside Parliament for the Cape Town Unites for Animals (CTUFA) annual march.
I would like to help to reduce violence in the Western Cape because I want to in response to the most heinous threat to peace in my community. Having absorbed the effect of an attempted abduction on one of my mentees in Mitchell’s Plain in 2019, I feel strongly that this is where I would like to put my energy in 2020.
